POLICEMAN’S LOT
WILL BE HAPPIER
PAY TO BE RAISED
(THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) j WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The reproach of lugubrious comedy constables that “a policeman’s lot is not a happy one” will have less foundation now that the New Zealand Cabinet has decided to increase the pay of sergeants and constables in all branches of the force by 1s a day. The Minister of Justice, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston. in announcing the decision to-day, added that the allowance to all branches of the detective branch had now been placed on an equal scale of 3s a day.’ Acting-detectives will receive an .allowance of Is 6d a day, and plain-clothes constables in the detective force Is a day, in lieu of uniform. The Minister states that the increase is necessary in order to retain in the force men with the necessary high qualifications, and also to attract others. An increase is also to be granted to superintendents, inspectors, and sub-inspectors, while the question of amending the law in regard to superannuation as affecting the police force is now under consideration by Cabinet.
EVERYONE PLEASED
NEW POLICE BILL WOMEN POLICE PROBABLY The information from Wellington that members of the Police Force are to receive an increase in allowance has been received with general satisfaction by all ranks in Auckland. The increase to the senior officers has not yet been made public. Previously New Zealand lagged behind the Australian rates of pay, but the increase just notified will bring the Dominion police pay on a level with that prevailing In Australia. It is thought that the new Police Bill will be presented to the House either to-day or to-morrow. One of the most important clauses of the measure will deal with the age of retirement of police officers. It is also thought that the Bill will contain provision for the establishment of women police.
