THE CHADWICK CUP
J. CHADWICK, one of the best known figures in Auckland turf circles, was in reminiscent vein when responding to the complimentary remarks made regarding the support given to trotting by the Press at the meeting of members of the Otahuhu Trotting Club. The veteran sporting enthusiast related several incidents connected with the sport in the early days in Auckland, and stated he had given the first cup for trotting competition in the province, the event being run before either the Auckland or Otahuhu Clubs were in existence. The Chadwick trophy was won by a mare named Maggie, which Joe had previously sold for a modest “tenner" After ©he won the event, he tried to buy her back, but the owner was so elated at the mare’s victory that he put A prohibitive price on her, the sum .asked being equivalent to many tenners. “Maggie,” said Mr. Chadwick, “was a three-minute trotter, but now some of them are getting close to a two-minute gait.”
