GRAND OPERA STAR LEARNS NEW LANGUAGE

MADAME MARION FRANK When Madame Marion Frank arrived in Australia with the J. C. Williamson Grand Opera Company she could not speak a word of English. This morning, on the Niagara, she chatted brightly of her trip, and though one or two words were amusingly misplaced, she showed that she had conscientiously, learned a new language. Madame Frank is a dramatic contralto. She has been singing the Wagnerian roles in Australia and is now on her way to America, where she is under contract for a concert tour, and to sing at the Schubert centenary. Madame is a commanding figure. She was born in Budapest and has sung in grand opera in most of the European capitals. “Australia, I have made many, many good friends there,” she said this morning. “And I come back there and to New Zealand. That will be after I sing in America and Vienna.” “Melba is the very, very great artist,” she remarked with enthusiasm when she was asked about Dame Nellie’s recent appearance in “Boheme.” “For an old woman she is wonderful. Her voice is still a great one.”
