CROWDED TRAINS
RUSH SOUTHWARDS THREE ENGINES ON EXPRESS Three locomotives were needed to get the second express for Wellington up the Remuera incline last evening. Hundreds of people flocked round the platform at the Railway Station before the train left, despite the torrential rain. The New South Wales Rugby team, the boxers who have been attending the tournament and numbers of basketball players were all going South and crowds of friends had arrived to see them off. The Limited left without an unoccupied seat or berth and a waiting list of dozens. The second express left with a total of 20 cars and every seat filled. Many passengers had to stand. Although there were two locomotives on the second train they could not negotiate the Remuera cutting. A third engine was sent out and pushed the snorting train to the top. There was a delay of an hour. The heavy load and the slippery rails were responsible for the trouble.
