TOURNAMENT ENDS

WEBSTER SHIELD SOCCER AT HUNTLY AUCKLAND’S GOOD WIN (From Our Own Correspondent) HUNTLY, Thursday. Through a Waikato boy presenting Wellington with a goal, the former team eliminated itself as challengers for the Webster Shield with Auckland, and the prospects of a great go between Auckland and Waikato were doomed. Waikato drew with Auckland, Auckland beat Wellington by one goal, and Wellington won against Waikato. For evenness of the three teams — Auckland, Waikato, and Wellington—it would be hard to find a similar position in any code, as Mr. Harrison said at the complimentary social to the visitors, when replying to the toast of the North Island Primary Schools Association, that he was proud to be able to take the shield back to Auckland. Mr. Harrison—who, by the way, is one of the headmasters of the Auckland schools—mentioned that his school boasted 16 Soccer teams—a fine record of enthusiasm for the roundball game. Mr. Grono (Wellington), Mr. Tom Crowe (Manawatu), Mr. Baillie (Waikato), made responses, and in handing over the shield to Auckland Mr. 15s 6d —Mechanics’ Overalls Suits— At Bert Marshall’s. •

Geo. Cox, the indefatigable secretary of the South Auckland Association, did the honours in his usual capable style. Mr. E. George, chairman of the Huntly Town Board, Mr. Jack Watson, general manager of the Taupiri Coal Company, very modestly invited the Soccer folk to come over to bowls when their sphere of usefulness was exhausted. It was a fitting termination to a. good contest, and the Waikato has lost none of its prestige as far as school Soccer is concerned. The gala week ends to-night with a big boxing tournament in the Huntly Town Hall. Mr. Charles Scott, president of the North Island Primary Schools’ Association, and his committee, with Mr. A. Stewart as secretary, are to be complimented on the success of the management of the Webster Shield for 1928.
