Ancient Well
Strange Happenings Under Old House DOG AND A POLICEMAN Quite near the Supreme Court stands an ancient house, under which there is a well. Since the early days of Auckland it has remained there, dark, musty and forgotten. It was discovered two or three years ago by an old man who, seeking shelter, had crept under the house with the sacks that were his blankets. Irish imprecations proceeding from the gloom startled the milkman at dawn next morning. The police subsequently rescued the homeless one from the well. Since then it has been re-discovered by two dogs and a cat. A day or two ago whimperings as of an animal in pain touched the heart of the woman living in the house—a dog down the well? Poor thing, how it must long for water. After two days window-cleaners came with ropes and ladders to the rescue. One descended into the well He shouted that it was dirty, oppressive and creepy. A crowd gathered. A passing policeman inquired what was the matter, and they told him. “There’s a dog V'd up on the other side of the fence, ’ he remarked, and walked on.
