NOT FOR CITY COUNCIL
LATE CITY
CONTROL OF AUCKLAND’S WATER MEASURE REJECTED (THE SUN',S Parliamentary JZeporter) WELLINGTON, Friday Flat rejection of the Auckland Water Supply Bill, introduced by Mr. J. S. Dickson, by the Local Bills Committee, was one of the surprises of the committee reports tendered this afternoon. The Bill, which was introduced at the instance of the Auckland City Council, on whom it would have conferred power to be the water-supply in®- authority for the whole of suburban Auckland, embodied the principles sei out by the report of the Water Commission which wetit thoroughly into the situation last year. Xo reason for the recommendation which in its own terms was, “that the Bill be not allowed to proceed,” wap <nven by the committee. The report was adopted. “BOARD NEARER” LOCAL BODIES PLEASED The killing of the Water Supply Bill is regarded by the outside local bodies as a win. They have fought it through- , out mainly on the ground that the j water supply should not be a monopoly ! of one body, but should be controlled ! by the districts affected. This argument was backed up by opposition to the power to raise loans without polls, given in Clause 6. The local bodies held that this was equally unjust, and that they would pay the interest orr the loans indirectly as charges for water. "If the city will come into a water board, so much the better,” remarked a local bodies’ representative this morning, "but if it will not then the local bodies will move in the direction of securing a water board for themselves.” He was of opinion that the killing of the Water Bill and its proposed monopoly brought a board nearer.
