OLD COUPLE WHO LIVED WITH DOGS AND FOWLS
IN FILTHY SHED “WON’T BE SEPARATED” (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, To-day. There was a pathetic scene in the Police Court this morning when Archibald Nelson and his wife, an bid couple, were charged with vagrancy. The evidence disclosed that the old people were living in a shed at Putiki, in which also were kept cats, fowls and doga. The premises were in a filthy condition. The couple existed on the husband’s pension of 17s a week. The wife was shabbily dressed and her shoes almost worn to ribbons. The old people, when offered the choice of going to the Jubilee Home, protested vigorously. The magistrate, Mr. J. S. Barton, it was a pity to see them arrive at this stage in their declining years. He regretted he had no option but to send them to gaol for a week for treatment and observation. He trusted that in the interval they would make up their minds to go to the liome. “I won’t go there,” said the old lady, “i don’t want to l»e separated from him,” pointing to her husband.
