NEW REGENT

VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES This evening gives the last opportunity of seeing the double feature programme now being shown at the New Regent Theatre. The first feature is a comedy by W. C. Fields and Chester Conklin. It tells in the typical Fields and Conklin manner a tale of Richard Whitehead, who buys an empty section and starts to sell oil shares on the supposition that there is an oil well on the section. In this he has the backing of the Caldwells, tke richest people in the district. With Caldwell’s influence, Whitehead sells great sections of the fake oil well stock and Hunter is the only one who mistrusts him. Hunter’s suspicions are justified when a former henchman of the oil promoter tells him the whole proposition is a fake. Hunter is forced to keep quiet about his discovery, however, because his daughter is engaged to Caldwell, who has taken the managership in ignorance of its crookedness. One of the most dramatic stories ever produced by Adolphe Menjou is the second attraction on the programme. This is “A Night of Mystery.” The story opens when Gilberte Boismartel (Evelyn Brent) is giving a farewell party to the dashing Captain Ferreol (Adolphe Menjou), a former sweetheart, who is leaving for service in Africa. He has taken on a new love, Therese D’Egremont, when Gilberte had married the Marquis, a magistrate in a French criminal court. Excellent entertainment is provided by The Eleven Rascals, whose tumbling and dancing is of a high order. The troupe also contains some expert contortionists and trape2e artists. The musical programme is, as usual, in the hands of Maurice Guttridge and his Regent Operatic Orchestra.
