“THE GARDEN OF ALLAH” The conflict between the spiritual and the material is the theme of “The Garden of Allah,” to he shown this evening at the Tudor Theatre, Remuera. Alice Day and Ivan Petrovitch have the leading roles. The story tells of Boris Androvsky. a young Trappist monk, who grows restless and leaves Tie desert monastery. In Algiers he meets Domini Enfilden, an English girl, ami despite his vows, marries her. Later Domini realises that a seciVt weighs heavily upon her husband’s soul. The pair then face the problem—does Boris’s duty to his sacred vows come before his duty to his wife? “The Pioneer Scout,” a tale of the days when the wagon trains crossed + he American continent, is the second picture. Fred Thomson is the star. “THE BIG NOISE” AT CAPITOL A humorous satire on American journalism and politics, “The Big Noise,” will be shown this evening at ihe Capitol Theatre. All the glamour and colour of the famous carnival of fun at Coney Island is brought to the screen, and presents a vivid contrast to the scenes showing the lower East Side of New York, where much of the action in the picture takes place. In the chief role, that of a subway guard who is acclaimed as a hero for a day to suit the electioneering campaign of an unscrupulous political party, Chester Conklin has a part which admirably suits his remarkable talents as a comedian. The splendid supporting cast includes Alice White, Sam Hardy, Bodil Rosing, and David Torrance. “The Way of All Flesh,” a dramatic story of a man’s downfall, will also be shown, starring Emil Jannings.
Three hundred members of the University of Southern California military reserve were engaged to appear in the uniforms of the Bosnian-Herze-govinian Army for scenes in "Love Me and the World Is Mine,’; the big Universal production.
