N.Z. Bulldog’s Success Advice has been received from Sydney that Mr. J. P. Buchanan’s New Zealand - bred bulldog, "Mnemosyne, was successful at the recent championship show of the Bulldog Club <•' New South Wales. The bulldog won two first prizes and one second, as well as four trophies, including the valuable founders’ trophv. “Had To Speed” J. Bail was allowed, self £l5O and one surety of £l5O. Influenza at Rawene A mild outbreak of meningitis and influenza is prevaJent in the vicinity of Rawene. Several deaths having occurred during Um past throe mmeki steps are being taken to prohibit public indoor meetings. Unpaid Hospital Fees A decision that about 50 peopl* mostly young men who are in arrears with their hospital fees, will be prosecuted, was made at a Hospital Board meeting yesterday. Masterton Supports Summer Time The Masterton Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution supporting legislation giving authority for local daylight saving schemes. The Masterton Borough Council at its meeting this evening decided to urgo upon the Government the desirability of allowing Mr. Sidey every facility in having his Bill considered, by Parliament. • * • Christchurch Trams Although there were over 18.000 less passengers carried by the Christchurch Tramways during June, the Tramways Board is in an improved financial position. For the four weeks ended Ju’y 2 the number of tram passengers dwreastd by 18.484. As against this, the number of bus passengers increased by 3.908. There was a decrease in earnings of £423. However, Mr. W. Hayward told the board on Monday that operating expenses had decreased by £1,495. • * • Uppo’s Leader? Canterbury members of the United Party are firm in their belief that the cablegram alleged to have been sent to Sir Joseph Ward in Canada by 50 candidates of the party asking him to lead it at the general election and in Parliament was sent without authority, and not by any members fW the perry. The candidates themselves, when finally selected, will meet early next month to formulate their policy and elect a leader. Liverpool Bids for Trade The trade representative of the Mersey Docks Harbour Board. Mr. R. W. Rome, will sail by the Ulysses on September 1 on a six months* tour of Australia and New Zealand, with a view to encouraging direct shipments to Liverpool. * * * * U.S. Mail Tender The Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Company has submitted a tender to the United States Post Office for a contract to carry mails from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand. The tender is from 10s 6d to 33s 6d a nautical mile, according to the speed and gross tonnage of the ships used. No action has yet been taken on the tender. Run Over by Lorry “Accidental death” was the verdict returned by the Coroner. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., at an inquest held today on Robert who died in hospital on July 30 through severe cerebral contusion following a blow on the head received when he was run over by a motor-truck in the Great South Road.
