GRIM TOLL OF SEA

SHIP STRUGGLES TO PORT FIERCE FIGHT WITH ELEMENTS FOURTEEN LIVES LOST (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Received 10.40 a.m. PANAMA, Tuesday. AN amazing- story of a ship's fierce battle with the elements, when 14 lives were lost, is related in the log of the tramp steamer, William A. McKinney, which arrived last night, long overdue from Seattle.

Heavy seas shifted forward the lumber deck-load. The mast crashed over the starboard side, and in the next moment the whole deck load went overboard. All hands were called on deck to cover the hatches, which were washed away. A big wave swirled over the ship, swamping her from stem to stern. The windows in the upper chartroom were broken, and the wheelhouse was flooded.

Fourteen men were carried overboard. No attempt at rescue was possible. The ship cruised in the vicinity during the next day while the weather moderated. The floating lumber was carefully searched, but none of the missing men were found. The Williams A. McKinney was sjx days overdue at Panama from Balboa, en route to New York from San Pedro. She is owned by the Mystic Steamship Company of Boston, and is a vessel of 5,855 tons, built in 1916 at Newport News.
