UNIFORMITY NEEDED

TOWN-PLANNING SCHEMES SURVEY SUGGESTED The need for a uniform method of work on town-planning schemes was discussed at last evening’s meeting of the Aiickland Town-Planning Association presided over by Mr. W. J. Hold’sworth. “The idea, I think, is to secure unification in town-planning affairs,” said, the chairman. “We know it would be a tremendous mistake if each of the 26 local bodies was to go ahead with its own scheme regardless of the others. We want to make a constructive move to show that the best results can be obtained by united action.” “But has any constructive proposal been recommended?” asked a member. The Chairman: No, that is just what we want to discuss. Professor Knight drew attention to the official proposal •to form four groups in the Auckla,nd area, and the question was referred to the technical committee for report. The desirability of establishing a housing committee was discussed the opinion being advanced that women should be included. Miss Alice Hasten said several women’s organisations had considered undertaking some such investigation and their support might be of material value. “After seeing some of the houses in the city, I think the matter might reasonably be referred tb Commissioner Hay for inclusion among the sins of Auckland,” said Mr. T. Bloodworth. He sugaested the housing c'ommittee should be useful rousing the interest of local bodies in remedying, as far as possible, the existing conditions. Another aspect of the question related to the erection of blocks of flats which did not comply with the best town-planning ideals, he added. Before such a movement was allowed to go too far some action should be taken: otherwise, there was a danger of the development of the class of tenement house all desired to avoid. Miss Basten was deputed to suggest the personnel of a housing committee for submission to the next meeting.
