DECISION TO CONTEST SEAT WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF MR. COATES (Special to TUB SUTTj CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The information conveyed to the Mayor of Ashburton, Mr. R. Galbraith, by the Hon. W. Nosworthy that he intended to contest the mid-Canterbury seat at the general election was sent, it is understood in Reform circles, without the knowledge of the Prime Minister. When Mr. Nosworthy left New Zealand, the settlement of the question as to whether he or Mr. D. Jones, M.P., should contest the seat was left in the hands of the Prime Minister and the Reform executive. The position so far as they were concerned was unaltered and the news that Mr. Nosworthy had decided to stand was unexpected.
