SMITH DEFEATS GRIME
FAST FIGHT IN NEW YORK (United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and "N.Z. Press Association.) NEW YORK, Saturday. A message from Bridgeport, Connecticut, states ethat in a boxing match between Grime (Australia), and the veteran, Smith, the judge’s decision on points was given iq favour of Smith. The decision was unpopular with the crowd and the newspaper men present. Grime, however, showed the need for further practice and the accomplishment of more effective defence tactics. The fight was fast and bloodless and very nearly even, with a consensus of opinion apparently favouring Grime. TENNIS AT TORONTO (United P.A.— By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) TORONTO, Saturday. In the tennis exhibition tourne_y today Ho pm an and Crawford (Australia) beat Nunns and Ham, 9 —7, 6 —l, Hawkes beat Crocker, 6 —4, 6—2. Patterson beat Wright, 6—3, 4—6, 6—4. Nunns beat Hopman, 6—4, 6—3. Patterson and Hawkes beat Wright and Crocker, 6 —3, 6 —4, 6 —4. In the final singles, Crawford beat Ham, 6 —2, 6—o. BOXING TO-NIGHT The professional middle-weight contest between Lachie McDonald, of New Zealand, and Tommy Mclnnes, of Scotland, for a purse of £2OO, will be staged in the Auckland Town Hall this evening. Both boxers have enviable reputations. McDonald is generally recognised as the best middle-weight in Australia, and Mclnnes is a go«d boxer of vast experience with a knock-out punch in either hand. The fight should be one of the best seen in Auckland. In addition a good r#'Ogramme of amateur bouts will be staged.
