Record Crowd Sees Cycling at Mangere

SATURDAY’S RACES REVIEWED STEWART RIDES BRILLIANTLY There was a record attendance at Mangere on Saturday at both the Manukau Amateur Cycle Club and the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club’s - road races. Both clubs had good entries, and as perfect weather conditions prevailed during the afternoon, this made the racing much more in- ! teresting. i The features of the afternoon’s spo.rt ' were the performances of J. C. Stewj art in the amateur and J. Lind op in the professional events. Both riders - put up very fine rides and both wins s were most popular. Several falls occurred in the amateur 50-mile race, but with the exception of a few abrasions nothing serious happened. Following are the results: Manakau Amateur Cycling Club.- — 55-mile Junior Handicap: R. Francis, 2m 30s, 1; F. Barnes, 2m 30s, 2; H. Norris, 2m 30s, 3. Time of winner, 17m 13s. Fastest time, D. Hope, scr, 15m 17s. A close finish between the placed riders. Eight started. 50-mile Trial Handicap; J. C. Stewart, 12m, 1; F. Taylor, 7m 30s, 2; C. Russell, 16m, 3; J. H. Wade, scr, 4. Tim© of winner, 2h.r 48m 535. Fastest time, J. H. Wade, scr, 2hr 40m 12s. Stewart finished strongly and won easily by two lengths. Russell was some distance away third, with Wade (scr), who beat Casey home, and also secured fastest time, close up fourth. After the race the ladies’ committee handed round tea, which was greatly appreciated by riders. Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club. —25-mile event; J. Lindop, 2m 30s, 1; D. Storey, 2m 30s, 2; W. Archer, 4m, 3; J. Henderson, 3m, 4. Time, 70m 7s. Fastert time, F. Prior, scr, 65m 9s. Seventeen riders started in this event. At the finish Lindop simply cleared right away from the rest of the field, to win as he liked. Storey beat Archer by two lengths for second place, with Henderson close up fourth. F. Prior put a length of daylight between him and S. Hayes fo.r “fastest” doing the 25 miles in the good time of 65m 9s.
