TRAIN-FARES DOWN

BRITISH COMPANY’S MOVE MEETING MOTOR RIVALRY (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (United Service) LONDON, Tuesday. The “Evening News” says the London and North-Eastern Railway intends to make a substantial reduction in fares on August 20 on its Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland branches, where motor-bus competition is very keen. It is believed that in some cases the fares will reach the pre-war level. The first sleeping saloon motorcoacli service was inaugurated this evening between London and Liverpool. The car has 10 bunks, in two tiers. The fare is 255, which includes morning tea and biscuits. This compares with the third-class railway fare of 24s 9d, without a sleeper. Similar services between London and Manchester and London and Plymouth will shortly be introduced. ___ ,
