DISCUSSING TRANSPORT

CITY COUNCIL MEETS IN COMMITTEE The City Council spent a further three hours discussing the Transport Commission's report last evening. The representatives of the outside local bodies did not attend. In a letter to the council they suggested that the council should r~JI a conference to discuss legislation anti that Sir James Gunson should N asked to act as chairman, he beins quite independent. The council’s decision last evening will not be divulged until the council meeting to-morrow evening. The local bodies’ letter to the council adhered to the stand that it wouU be useless to discuss the report, and that a conference on legislation was desired. “The matter is urgent, and, unless it can be dealt with promptly, the inconvenience and losses to the public, which have been caused by the present position, will continue until tl«e next session of Parliament,” remarked the letter. “The local bodies, therefore, ask that there be no delay in calling a conference. “The local bodeis have had the assistance of Mr. W. J. Holdsworth and Mr. T. Bloodworth, who. as representatives of the Citizens’ Committee, have been added to our committee. These gentlemen would appear as members of the committee at any conference.” The ML Wellington Road Board lasi evening passed a resolution favouring legislation.
