GREAT ATHLETIC CONTEST SURPRISE IN HURDLES (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. The athletic contest between the Empire and the United States at Stamford Bridge attracted the second largest crowd ever seen at an athletic meeting in England. The attendance is officially estimated at 41,000 persons. The competitors, who paraded before the crowd with the Americans leading, received an ovation. The weather was ideal. The Americans caused one of the biggest surprises by winning the hurdles race, which was a chapter of accidents for the British. The result
of the contest was a victory for the Americans. The results were: Three Miles Teams’ Race. —Empire, 17 points; United States, 20. Time, 14min 37 2-ssec. Steeplechase Relay.—Empire 1. Time, 7min 52sec. Won by six yards. Mile Medley Relay.—Empire 1. Time, 3min 40 3-ssec. Won by 15yds. 400 Yards Relay.—United States 1. Time, S 7 4-ssec. Won by inches. Carlton (Australia) replaced Legg (South Africa) in the second stage. Williams (Canada), the Olympic sprint champion, was just beaten. Carlton lost a little ground. The United States led throughout. Long Jump.—United States 1; distance <4 feet 3 inches. The individual jumps were: Ham, 25 feet 1 inch; Dates, 24 feet S inches; Hubbard, 24 feet 6 inches: Empire, 6S feet 11 inches; Atkinson, 23 feet 10g inches; Harrison (Australia), 22 feet 101 inches; Piljoen, 21 feet 4.1 inches. Throwing the Hammer.—United States 1: distance, 476 feet 10 inches; Empire, 433 feet sin. Throwing the Javelin. —Empire 1; distance, 594 feet 115 inches. Pilling (Canada) threw 204 feet; S. Lay (New Zealand). 203 feet 9 inches; Weightman Smith (South Africa), IS7 feet 25 inches; United States, 555 feet 7 inches. Pole Jump.—United States 1; total height, 39 feet 1 inch; Empire, 36 feet. High Jump.—United States 1; total height, 19 feet; Empire, IS feet 3 inches.
