36-GAME TENNIS SET
TOURNEY IN AMERICA
(United P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (United Service) NEW YORK, Saturday. In the lawn tenins tournament at the Meadows Club, Southampton, Mangin defeated Hopman (Australia), 6—l, 2—6, 6—4, 6—2. In the final Bell defeated Mangin, 6—o, 6 —3, 7 —5. In the final of the doubles Lott and Doeg defeated Hawkes and Herndon, 19—17, G—4, G—4. In spite of Hawkes’s exhibition of some of the finest doubles play seen here for many years, Lott and Doeg overcame the Australian and American combination chiefly through Herndon’s inability to give his partner adequate support. Hawkes was at his best. His sharply angled volleys and half-vol-leys and lobs were roundly applauded. Herndon and Hawkes led at 6—5 and 40—30 in the first set, but could not win the needed point. When Hawkes’s service was broken through in the fifth game of the second set all doubt as to the outcome of the match was ended.
