A thrilling contest took place at Invercargill on Saturday between Star and Pirates for the Galbraith Shield premiership for the season. The game ended 13 all, and Star, which previously led in the competition by two points, thus gained the championship. There were 15,000 spectators at the Varsity-Poneke match at Wellington on Saturday. Varsity won 16-12. ♦ ♦ * When Wairarapa defeated Bush in a Ranfurly Shield game at Masterton on Saturday, Cundy kicked 12 goals for the winners. The score was 57-11. * * * In a keen district Rugby match on Saturday Albany defeated Brown’s Bay by six points to nil. H. Murdoch scored two unconverted tries for the winners. A gala day will be held on August 25, when a seven-a-side tournament will be held. , . * In the Drill Hall at Dunedin on Saturday night, before an attendance of over 6,000, Johnny Leckie, 8.13 J, knocked out Tommy Barber, 8.13 J, in the third round. Barber was sent down on four occasions in this round and showed remarkable gameness before he went down for the last time.
