ST. JAMES THEATRE
A BRILLIANT REVUE All that goes to make a successful revue is being presented at the St. James Theatre by the “League of Notions” Revue Company. This enjoyable show was packed out on Saturday evening, and many were unable to gain admission. The show opens with a tuneful choiais of welcome when the assembled “League” says “Hello, people!” in a manner which links the onlookers and performers in happy harmony. Miss Queenie Paul shares with Mr. Mike Connors the organisation of the "League,” and these two popular and welcome artists contribute very largely to the success of the entertainment. Miss Paul has a most pleasing voice and personality, and her duets with Mike Connors were some of the most enjoyable features of the evening, particularly “High, High, High .up in the Hills.” From the musical standpoint, Linn Smith’s Jazz Band, which has the latter part of the first half of the programme, is a unique combination. This syncopating organisation has delighted Aucklanders on more than one occasion, and on Saturday had further proof of their popularity. Their interpretation of “The Storm” was particularly good. As a burlesque comedian Syd Beck scored a personal triumph, and the audience was loath to part with him. H© convulsed the audience with his originality, his drollness and facial expressions. The laughter side of the programme is also contributed to by Mr. Ernie Paulasto. The two Paulasto Brothers, by the way, excel in the simultaneous dance. Miss Valerie Rougal and Mr. Bert. Rayne provide several fascinating dances, and Phyllis Baker, Gladys Shaw and Leila Andrews all add to the dancing part of the entertainment. Mention must also be made of the songs of Les Pearce. Praise is due to the Exquisite Six, who, charmingly frocked, danced some fine ballets. Solos, concerted numbers and a succession of dramatic, sentimental and humorous playlets, added further variety to the programme.
