LAST OF PADDLE BOATS

FATE OF NEWCASTLE BIGGEST SOUTH OF LINE The passing of the Newcastle—the last of the ocean-going passenger steamers of the paddle type in Australia—will be regretted by hundreds of people. However, progress leaves no room for sentiment, and the Newcastle, having given way to steamers of modern type, some years ago was relegated to the position of relief steamer, sailing at irregular intervals, in a service in which she was once the pride of the fleet. Recently she was sold to a syndicate, by whom she will be broken up.

The Newcastle is the largest paddle steamer in the Southern Hemisphere, being of 1,251 tons gross register. She was built at Kinghorn, by J. Key and Sons in 1884, and has a length of 246 feet 6 inches, a breadth of 32 feet 9 inches, and a depth of 15 feet 9 inches.
