CHECKING LUGGAGE

NEW RAILWAY SYSTEM TO OPERATE FROM OCTOBER 1 From October 1 the Railway Department will inaugurate a new system of handling passengers’ luggage. After that date travellers will be able to hand their luggage to carriers who call for it at the door and be relieved of all responsibility of taking it to the station. The carriers will convey the luggage to the railway station, check it through to its destination, and if necessary the department will arrange for its transference at the end of the journey. Carriers will be supplied with blocks of LI3 left parcels tickets and labels at a discount of 25 per cent. On presentation of passenger tickets by the carriers at the luggage office, railway officials will check the luggage in the ordinary way. The carriers will then enclose the passengers’ tickets and luggage checks in an envelope (which has previously been endorsed with the passenger’s name), attach the Ll 3 label to the envelope and deposit it in the luggage room. All passengers will need to do is to go to the luggage room and collect the envelope containing their tickets and checks. The Railway Department will supply the envelopes. Excess luggage will be treated in the same way as ordinary luggage, as far as the carriers are concerned. If passengers require their luggage to be checked through, and collected by a carrier at its destination, all they need to do is to write “Railway to arrange delivery” on the addressed label. The Union Steam Ship Company has agreed to the pursers of intercolonial and Trans-pacific steamers at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff receiving luggage on behalf of passengers. Delivery between rail and steamer will be made by Railway Department vehicles at a cost of 2s a package. The new system, is to be established first at Auckland, Frankton Junction, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Hastings, Napier, Wellington, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Christchurch, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill and Bluff.
