HEALTH SERVICES
FREE HOSPITALS WOULD COST £1,000,000 MORE EXTENSION OF DENTAL CLINICS (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. In dental clinics New Zealand was doing more than any other country, said the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health, replying to the debate on the Health Department’s report. So far as the training of nurses was concerned they were pressing forward as fast as possible with the means at their disposal. He would not be satisfied until they were training at least 50 nurses a year, but if the House was prepared to support the Government in this matter he hoped to be able in a few year-s to overtake the requirements of the Dominion. Discussing the constitution of hospital boards, the Minister declared himself against any change. If hospitals were made absolutely free it would cost the country at least £1,000,000 more. In addition to this extra cost, he was satisfied certain present sources of revenue would disappear, to say nothing of the demands that would come in for hospitals from all directions. The report was laid on the table.
