They Play Lively Football in Fiji
Varsity Men Have Helped Game There
COMING VISIT EAGERLY AWAITED
“The tropics are usually associated with a life of langourous ease in the fdiade of waving coconut palms, but it the Auckland University Rugby fifteen expects to play football against a tired Fiji side next week it will get the shock of its life.” In these breezy terms a Suva correspondent of The Sun commences an interesting review of the progress of Rugby in Fiji, and the part Auckland lias played in helping along the game in the Islands. Visitors to Suva are amazed at the variety of sport to be had on its main playground, Albert Park —the same ground on which Kingsford Smith landed on his recent trans-Pacific fiight. On any afternoon one may see two football matches, two hockey games, tennis, cricket, and golf, each with its litle crowd of spectators, and each apparently oblivious of the neighbouring games. Suva is the headquarters of the Rugby Union in Fiji, and it can boast of four senior European teams, three junior teams, and six native teams. Bright, snappy football is played by all grades, and the influence of New Zealand Rugby is shown in the presence of the wing-forward, and the latest rulings regarding “touch” and so forth.
