AUCKLAND FESTIVAL
COMPETITIONS THIS MONTH On Thursday, August 23, the Auckland Competitions Society will commence its annual musical and elocutionary festival. It will continue for about 12 days. Last year 3,000 competitors entered in the various sections, and with 128 classes for competition this year it is expected that this number will be exceeded. This year the literary section has not been included in the schedule, poor support being accorded this section last year.
The judges have been appointed as follows: Music, Mr. C. W. Kerry, Wellington; elocution, Professor Maxwell Walker, Auckland; dancing, Miss Madeline Viner. Wellington. Mr. Kerry adjudicated at the competitions held two years ago, and although Professor Walker has not previously judged at Auckland, he has officiated in this capacity at various Southern competitions. Three halls, the Town Hall, Concert Chamber and Unity Hall, will again be in use. Owing to doubt as to the availability of the halls required, little time has been allowed competitors between the issuing of the schedule and the closing of entries. As it was considered desirable to hold the competitions in the school holidays, this was unavoidable. As far as possible classes have been made “own selection,” so in many classes test pieces will not have to be prepared. This arrangement will not only be more convenient for the competitors, but will also make for greater variety
