SENTENCES AT DUNEDIN

SUPREME COURT SESSIONS Press Association. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The following prisoners were sentenced by Mr. Justic Ostler in the Supreme Court to-day: George McDonald, alias Taylor, forgery, three months’ hard labour, and amount to be refunded. Henry Arthur Harris, theft of £295 Is Id, while acting cashier of the Todd Motor Company, two years’ probation. William Patrick Murphy, five charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit crimes, five charges of breaking and entering, and one charge of theft, three years’ reformative treatment.

Thomas Joseph Donald Lowry, breaking and entering and theft, three years’ reformative treatment. Donald McGillivray was found guilty of breaking and entering a dwelling at Tokoioi and assaulting Archibald McDonald. Sentence was deferred. John Henry Appleby, of Palmerston South, was found guilty of carnal knowledge. The jury brought in a strong recommendation of mercy on fenced by Mr. Justice Ostler in the Susentencing accused to four years’ hard labour, his Honour said there was little in th-e evidence to show any ground for mitigation of the usual penalty of seven years, but in view of the jury’s recommendation he could do so without sacrificing the public interests.
