ST. JAMES THEATRE
‘‘MERCENARY MARY” For three more nights only will “Mercenary Mary” scheme to get the gold of her rejuvenated grandfather in the brightest musical farce seen here for years. „ The English Musical Comedy Company, headed by Elsie Prince, Jimmy Godden and Charlton Morton, is reaching the end of its record-breaking run. On Thursday evening the final performance of “Mercenary Mary,” the third and best production of the company. will be given. A sparkling show, full of pleasant melodies and colourful ballets, “Mercenary Mary” goes with pep and vim from the opening chorus to the final curtain. The plot is a novel one. Three young men need money either to get married or support their wives, and the “Golden Gusher” Oil Company attracts them. They place all their capital into it, only to find that the police are looking for the man who sold the stock. Jimmy Godden is excellent as the lugubrious Chris Skinner, who is persuaded to divorce his -wife, just for the time being, so that his grandfather will not cut him out of his will. Elsie Prince is the charming wife, who has no objections to being “compromised,” as long as it is to help Chris. The songs are delightful, including “Honey, I’m In Love With You,” “Tie a String Around Your Finger,” and “I’m a Little Bit Fonder of You.”
