SUBURBAN CINEMAS

NEW THEATRE FOR PONSONBY £40,000 BUILDING Providing negotiations are satisfactorily completed, a modern and up-to-date picture theatre will be erected shortly at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Pompallier Terrace, Ponsonby. The site is a commanding one, and with the building designed in Moorish style, it should prove an imposing addition to the architecture of that suburb. Provision will also be made for nine modern shops on the ground floor. Plans for a brick structure to cost £40,000 have been prepared by Mr. N. Cole, and it is considered that it will be completed in seven months. Both in the gallery and the ground floor there will be accommodation for 800 people, and the seating arrangements are to be carried out in accordance with the latest modern designs. The stage will be 40 feet wide and 30 feet deep, and the plans show the latest systems for indirect lighting. Further development of the cinema facilities in the Ponsonby district have also been put in hand, arrangements having been made by the Thomas O’Brien Theatres, Limited, for the reconstruction of the Britannia Theatre, Three Lamps, at a cost of over £12,000. It is expected that the work will be completed in about five months’ time.
