PAID SURF LIFE-SAVERS
AMATEUR STATUS QUESTION DEBATE AT AMSTERDAM (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) AMSTERDAM, Friday. The International thing Federation held an interesting debate on the position of paid surf life-savers, on a motion by South Africa to accord them amateur status. The delegates from Australia, New Zealand and England supported the motion. The American delegate suggested that the International Federation should adopt the American ruling, allowing a paid life-saver to compete as an amateur, provided he did not compete during his term of office, or within 30 days thereafter. Mr. Duff (Australia) strongly supported the motion. He said life-savers who swam in surf gained no advantage for still-water competition. The proposal was rejected by a large majority. The Continental and Canadian delegates opposed it, on the ground that the principle was open to abuse, as clubs might thus obtain the 'paid services of the best swimmers under the cloak of life-saving.
