£2,000 NEEDED

APPEAL FOR CHILDREN BRETT MEMORIAL HOME ALTERATIONS NECESSARY Campaign organisers are making an appeal for £2.000, the amount necessary to convert the Brett Memorial Home, Takapuna, into a suitable habitation for the children from the Richmond Road H ° me - I ‘‘T? Kiteroa,” the late Sir Henry Brett’s residence, has been presented to the Church of England of the Auckland Province as a home for children, but before it can be occupied it will be necessary to make certain alterations to the house, and build dormitories. The movement resulting - in the first provision of shelter for the destitute children was made by Archdeacon Mac Murray who. when vicar of St. Mary’s, realised the great necessity for such a home. As a venture in faith he borrowed £2OO from an Auckland business man, and paid that sum as a deposit on the Richmond Road property. The act of faith was justified, and now the children are about to be moved to even finer surroundings. If the public makes whole-hearted response to the appeal, it is hoped to have the Takapuna home ready for occupation in October, so that the children will have the benefit of the summer season by the sea. The new home, as the old one was, will be open to children of any denomination so long as there is room. In Richmond Road there was accommodation for from 60 to 70 children, but at times as many as SO were sheltered. At Takapuna there will be accommodation for 120. The organisers of the appeal campaign are Canon C. H. Grant Cowon and Mr. C. F. Bennett. The committee which will administer the Takapuna home includes: His Grace Archbishop Averill (chairman), the Ven. Archdeacon Mac Murray, Canon Percival James, Canon F. \V. Young, Canon Grant Cowen, the Rev. W. Averill and Messrs. C. F. Bennett and A. S. Bankart.
