WANTING IT BOTH WAYS
ALTHOUGH they said that they did not wish to dictate to the New Zealand Rugby League, the managers of the English League team who attended last night's meeting of the executive were decidedly insistent on some of the requests they made. As an argument in favour of their contentions, Mr. Hutchins said that the last New Zealand team which visited England played under the conditions existing at Home without any objection. Quite so. But Mr. Hutchins cannot have it both Mr. J. Carlaw rightly pointed out that the constitution of the game in New Zealand provided that players could be replaced. This has been an integral part of the game here both in League and Rugby from time immemorial. In practice, it has been found to work out much more fairly than the non - replacement rule. Why should a team be penalised because a man has to go off hurt? This introduces an element of luck into the game which is not in accord with New Zealand ideas. The rule has not been abused here. And there is an old maxim: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
