EDUCATION EXPERT TO RESIGN THIS YEAR
MR. E. C. PURDIE’S WORK Introducer of the principle of the grading of teachers by inspectors, and one of the first advocates of the junior high school system, Mr. E. C. Purdie, secretary of the Auckland Education Board, is to retire about the end of the year. Mr. Purdie began his teaching career in 1881, with the Auckland Board, after being educated at the Tararu and other primary schools and the Auckland Grammar School. He is the son of Mr. Charles Purdie, a landscape gardener of Auckland and Thames. After teaching on the staff of the Thames High School he became an inspector and held that position for eight years. STOOD FOR PARLIAMENT In 1911 he became headmaster of the Wliangarei School. Leaving the teaching profession for the second time, he tried twice to defeat the Hon. F. Mander, M.L.C., for the Marsden electorate, but failed. With Mr. John Berry he produced a newspaper in Whangarei. He returned to school inspectorship with advisory rank, and in all served the board for 23 years as a teacher and eight as an inspector. He became secretary to the board on the death of Mr. Richard Crowe in 1918.
