MR. AMBROSE TRUST
An old Whitford pioneer, Mr. Ambrose Trust, died at Howick yesterday at the age of 80. He arrived in Auckland from Devonshire with his parents in the sailing ship Evening Star in 1860, and the family settled at Turanga Creek. In 1863 Maoris attacked the homestead during the absence of the parents. The eldest son, Air. Ambrose Trust, was 15 years of age at that time, and he tried to escape dragging his two younger brothers with him, but they were both killed and he was wounded. Managing to reach a neighbouring farmhouse, he gave the alarm. A detachment of cavalry was dispatched from Howick, but the Maoris were not caught. The greater part of Mr. Trust’s life was spent in the Whitford district. He was a member of the Whitford Road Board, which is now merged in the Manukau County; the school committee and the library committee. He was one of the founders of the Howick branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity. Air. and Airs. Trust celebrated their golden wedding six years ago. All*. Trust is survived by his wife, three sons and five daughters. There are 18 grandchildren. The funeral will take place at the Church of England Cemetery, Howick, to-morrow. MR. ARTHUR STEDMAN The death of Air. Arthur Stedman, who was well known in banking circles in various North and .South Island centres, took place at Auckland on Sunday. The late Mr. Stedman arrived in Auckland with his father, the late Hr. Stedman, of London, in the ship Frenchman in 1860. After living for some time in Auckland the family went to Christchurch where Hr. Stedman was the first London medical practitioner. Air. Stedman was one of the first pupils at Christ’s College and on leaving joined the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, later marrying Anna Lomax, step-daughter of the late Hon. R. Pharazyn, AI.L.C. After being branch manager at Greymouth, Nelson, Timaru, Wanganui and Napier Air. Stedman was manager at Christchurch, where he retired after & years’ service. He and his wife came to Auckland eight years ago. The late Air. Stedman was a prominent supporter of Rugby football an* rowing, and was a keen bowler. For 50 years he was an active churchman. There are four sons. Air. A. L. Stedman, Auckland: All*. Gerald Stedman, Hawera; Air. Ralph Stedman, Nelson; and Air. Nelson Stedman, Auckland. In 'February last Mr. and Airs. Stedman celebrated their golden wedding. MR. F. W. ARBON The death occurred yesterday at Palmerston North of Air. Frank Wilson Arbon, of Pohangina, a native of Swanage, England. Air. Arbon came to New Zealand 42 years ago. He farmed in the Pohangina "V alley. He served on various local bodies, and was president of the Alanawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He served on its committee for over 30 years, and was one of its few life members. He had been for some years chairman of the Pohangina County Council. He leaves a widow and two sons. MR. M. T. MELICAN The death occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon of Air. Michael Alelii can, at his residence, 24 Aratonga Avenue, One Tree Hill. Air. Alelican was one of the bestknown and most popular guards in the Auckland Railway staff. He was a familiar figure on the Limited express, where his courtesy and kindliness was always appreciated by the passengers. The late Air. Alelican was at work yesterday morning, but went home at midday as he was not feeling well. Soon after he arrived home he collapsed suddenly and died. He joined the railway service at Auckland in 3 807 and held various positions at Marton, Ohakune, Frankton Junction. At the time of his death he was acting-foreman at the Auckland station. The late Air. Alelican was only 48 years of age. He leaves a widow and two children.
