PETROL-TAX ALLOCATION

DISTRICT COUNCIL’S SHARE PROTEST TO HIGHWAYS BOARD (From Our Own Correspondent.) AVI-lANGAREI, Thursday. Inequitable distribution of the petrol tax funds has been drawn attention to by the No. 1 District Highways Council, which met here to-day. Mr. R. B. Russell (Hokianga County) and Mr. Luke AVebb (chairman, AVhangarei County) moved a resolution drawing the Highways Board’s attentioi to a considerable difference in the allocation of petrol tax funds between No. 1 and No. 2 districts, the latter receiving a much larger amount. The council was unanimous about the resolution, which concluded by notifying the board that the proposed allocation of funds available under the heading of “highways adjacent to cities” was not acceptable to No. 1 Council, and invited the board to submit its reasons for the discrepancy in the allocations between No. 1 and No. 2 districts.

A further resolution by Mr. L. AVebb, seconded by Mr. A. Long (Mangonui County) was carried, communicating to the board the council’s opinion that when its recommendations are turned down a reason should be given to them in explanation. The council decided to support the Whangarei County Council in its effort to obtain a 4 to 1 subsidy on the main roads adjacent to A\ r ha.ngarei borough, which by reason of through tourist and general traffic justified such consideration.

At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman, Mr. .T. McEnnis, district engineer Public AVorks, was re-elected for the ensuing year, and Messrs. Rodney Coates and R. Russell were reappointed to the executive.
