Owners of Whisky Stills Fined £6OO
OLD FAMILY BUSINESS NOTORIOUS FOR 50 YEARS Press Association. INVERCARGILL, To-day. Two men who pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of illicit whisky-stills in Southland were fined £6OO at the Police Court to-day. Duncan Alexander Stuart was charged with being unlawfully In ossession of a whisky still at Otapiri Gorge and with unlawfully making spirits. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined £450 on the first charge and £SO on the second. James Robertson, who was similarly charged and also in connection with a still found at Awarua Bay, was fined £SO on each charge. The Collector of Customs said the making of whisky has been notorious in Southland for the last 50 years, fie estimated the loss to the Government during this period at tens of thousands of pounds. He stressed the fact of the whisky being made wholesale and even offered for sale in Dunedin. Both accused were relatives of the McCraes, who were fined four years ago for running a still at Springhills. On the night previous to Stuart’s arrest 20 gallons of the whisky was sold at Hedgehope at £2 a gallon.
