EDWARDS’ STUD FARM

Mar della Establishment Transferred to Mangere

UP-TO-DATE APPOINTMENTS

THERE IS TROD ABLY NO BETTER-KNOW N NAME IN NEW ZEALAND TROTTING THAN THAT OF EDWARDS. AND CERTAINLY NONE MORE RESPECTED. THE LONG AND SUCCESS I CJ. ASSOCIATION WITH THE SPORT OF THE LATE -MANNY' EDWARDS, THE EFFICIENT MANNER IN WHICH HIS SON IS CARRYING ON THE GOOD WORK. AND THE SPLENDID ASSIST ANUE BEING RENDERED BY lIIS BROTHER. 11. P. EDWARDs. IN IMPROVING THE BREED OF STOCK IN THE DOMINION. ARE PROMINENT FACTORS TOWARDS THAT END.

The late “Manny” Edwards, who was a great trainer and reinsrnan has left an able representative in his son “Dil,” as he is familiarly known among the sporting fraternity, who has reached a high standard of efficiency is trainer and reinsrnan and has followed in the footsteps of his father. FT. P. Edwards, like Johnny Walker, is still going strong, and while of later years he has not paid a great deal of attention to the racing side of the

breeder. The Miirdilla'slud'wkh its high-grade American-bred sires, The Triumph and Worthy Bond, is wellknown to light-harness enthusiasts not only in the Auckland province, but throughout the Dominion. The stud farm at Papatoetoe was always a popular place of call for visiting owners and trainers while in Auckland, but on future occasions they will find B. P. at home in his new quarters near Mangere. BETTER FACILITIES Finding the Papatoetoe selection becoming insufficient for his increasing stud and breeding bu-siness, and that the facilities for extending the education of the promising young stock were restricted, the proprietor of Mardella sought a more central holding and was able to secure a very fine property within half-a-mile of the .Otaliuhu Trotting Club's course, where he daily exercises several of his team.

“Abaydos” recently accepted an invitation to visit the new selection, and after witnessing some members of the Edwards string in action at Otaliuhu proceeded to the homestead, which is situated in a nice sunny spot on the Mangere side of the Papatoetoe boundary. The property, which comprises 21 acres of excellent land, is carrying great feed, and the numerous paddock subdivisions allow plenty of scope for the stock. The holding runs right through to a road reserve, by which route the stock can find means of egress and ing**ess, doing away with the necessity ol traversing the main road at the front of the property. MODERN METHODS The stable and other appointments which have just been completed are a credit to the stud master, who carefully planned the whole outfit on the most modern devices. The main stable contains seven spacious, well-ventilated boxes, with

bigh-waisted doors, a novel idea which prevents the animal forcing it open with his chest. The mangers are of curved design, fitted with zinc trays which are lifted out for cleaning purposes. i The feed room is situated between stalls which contain two of the sires of the stud and the gentry are fed through a slide without the attendant requiring to enter the box. Harness room, sulky sheds and other convenient buildings have been erected, the whole of the structures being built with a view to comfort and convenience. There is a splendid supply of water which has been laid on to all the pastoral enclosures. The yards in and around the stables are well drained and covered with fine scoria and even during the wet weather everything under foot was reremarkablv dry and clean. While it probably took Mr. Edwards some time and thought to prepare the scheme, once a decision was arrived at no time was lost in putting it into execution, and although it. is only a little over two months since he removed to the new quarters, all details are now practically completed. The owner intends erecting a buffalo forge for the convenience of the shoesmith, and all shoeing and plating will be done on the premises. HEALTHY YOUNGSTERS The stock at Mardella show signs of having been “well done” and some of the youngsters are furnishing into

handsome animals. The Triumph and Worthy Bond are in excellent health and condition, and will be available again for breeders when the season

that high-class racing sire Killronev, whose stock are always in great demand. Mr. Edwards is naturally pleased at the early success of progeny of his two handsome horses. Great Triumph, the first of the Triumphs to sport silk, has twice been returned a winner this season, while Trustworthy, the only representative of Worthy Bond to face a race crowd, put up the very fine record of two wins and a third in three starts, a splendid performance for a two-year-old. Trustworthy is en-

gaged in the 1928 Great Northern Derby, in which Worthy Bond is also represented by a filly from llundalee and one from Lady Haldane. The former is at present in Australia, with S. M. August, who is racing her in the Commonwealth classics. The daughter of Lady Haldane was purchased at J. R. Corrigan’s Easter sale by Mr. J. A. Mitchell, of Longburn, for 385 guineas. Four attractive-looking foals were seen gambolling in rich pastures and a nice quartet they are. Two colts claim Worthy Bond as their pater, one being from the grey mare Agnes Chief, and takes after his dam for colour, while the other one is from Oleda. This chap was born on Guy Fawkes Day, so the approprite name of Guy Worthy is being claimed for him. The other pair are descendants of The Triumph, Hundalee being the mother of a colt, and La Muriel, a sister to Oakhampton, producing a filly. HORSES IN COMMISSION

A rare specimen is a yearling daughter of The Triumph aiad Lucetta, and despite her tender years she can trot in splendid style, and is also showing a disposition to go fast. The youngster will probably be known to racegoers as Baby Triumph, and when the time arrives for her to sport silk, she will be an acquisition to the sciu^r epaited

fraternity. The baby is receiving her education at the Otaliuhu track and has taken to the business like a duck takes to water. B. P. Edwards is also working the colt by Man-o’-War from Canzonetta, and he is a sweet pacer. Man-at-Arms, as he is called, is rising four, and lias not yet made his bow to the public, but when he does, there is no doubt the Mardella candidate will attract a whole heap of attention. The well-seasoned square-gaited son of El Carbine, Nebraska, is also plodding along in his work, and he has every appearance of making good in the coming season. He is one of the long-striding sort and has been given every chance by his owner to find his feet and the correct gait before being hunted along in the search for speed. The master of the Mardella Stud is certainly doing splendid work in the direction of improving the trottting stock of the Dominion, and as nothing succeeds like success, it is quite safe to predict that the early success achieved by the progeny of Worthy Bond and The Triumph will find B. P. Edwards succeeding in his mission of raising feature champions at the game.
