Two Firemen Injured In Spectacular Fire
PAINT FACTORY ABLAZE WELLINGTON LIGHTED UP Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. One of the most spectacular fires seen in Wellington for some time illuminated the city and surrounding hills shortly after two o’clock this morning. The blaze was in the paint factory of Bergen Lewis and Sons (Aust.), Ltd., a three-storyed brick building behind Hope Gibbons and Co., in Dixon Street. It was owned by Hope Gibbons. The whole of the Central Brigade turned out as well as units from Thomdon, Constable Street, Brooklyn and Miramar. Two firemen, J. Wright and J., Philp, had their faces and hands severely burned and several others were singed before the flames were under control. The injured men were taken to hospital and will probably be there for several days. Despite the apparent severity of the fire, when daylight came it was found the damage was not as great as had been feared. The top floor, on which were the offices and stores for paint, varnishes and oils, and the roof, were completely destroyed. Damage was done to other floors by water. The contents of the building were insured for £26.470 in the North British office, and the building for £7,000 in the New Zealand office.
