PRISONERS HELPED
AID GIVEN TO 600 SOCIETY’S GOOD WORK During the past 12 months the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society has assisted almost 600 cases. Details of the work done were furnished to-day in the report presented by the Rev. Jasper Calder to the annual meeting of the society, over which Archbishop Averill presided. The report stated that 1,500 men had been discharged from Mount Eden during the year, and of these many were only too glad to avail themselves of the aid offered by the society. The receipts for the year were £234 17s 6d, and this just about covered the expenditure Archbishop Averill commented on the fact that prisoners were paid no wages during the first three months of their restraint, and he suggested that this practice should he altered so that the prisoners* dependants did not suffer. The present officers were re-elected the ensuing year.
