GARAGE GOSSIP
The Canterbury Automobile Association is conducting a motor tour of its members to Mount Cook at the end of September. * * * Already six leading English firms are producing cars under ten-horse power: “Austin,” “Singer,” “Standard,” “Clyno,” “Triumph” and “Riley.” * * * Tile language of the industry is apt to be confusing. Who, for instance, would ever think it is absorbers that take the bumps out of the roads —not the bumpers?—“Motor.” * * * Arrange a piece of oilcloth behind the radiator to protect the engine from water when washing the exterior of the radiator. Turn the hose on at fair force. The radiator will prove easily cleanable by this process. * * * The points of the spark plug seldom need cleaning, but grease and mineral dirt will accumulate on the exterior and interior of the porcelain, so that the current passes that way instead of jumping the gap as intended. The plugs should be kept clean or ignition troubles will result. * * * Small town constable: Say, don’t you know enough to dim your lights going through town? Motorist: Sure, I do. How far is it to where the town begins? * * * An automobile racing driver, registered by the American Automobile Association, is required to undergo a thorough physical examination of the eyes, hearing, and heart. The candidate for a racer’s licence must take his car to a race track and give an exhibition of his driving before the A.A.A. officials there before they can properly register him. The licence is good for one year, and there is a fee of three dollars.
