Bishop Advises History Reading
CHURCH’S PROGRESS PATH to freedom (FT om Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. you feel discouraged U W . h vour Empire or your church, ab °a hfstory. The chief reason for rea !uih dissension and bitterness fs that the P eople w,ll „ not read and do not know h,story. Thus spoke Bishop Cherrington, of . „ Waikato Diocese, who visited Tau--1 unui over the week-end, and at the ‘Ten'ing service preached to a large congregation. In view of recent developments, considerable interest was taken in the Bishop’s visit. The preacher took his text from Acts V verses 1 and 2: “And certain men bich came down from Judea taught the brethren and said: Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses v 6 cannot be saved. When, therefore. Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas md certain other of them should go up l 0 Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.” Closing a very interesting discourse, his Lordship said that the Church was now a Catholic one open to receive everyone, regardless of race, colour or position. The Church had always led the way toward freedom, liberty and equality of the people. When you want cheering or encouraging,” said the speaker, “read history; when you want to know what the Church teaches and has taught, do not listen to anyone who comes along, or to anyone who writes ‘rubbish* in the* newspapers, but read history ” Asked by a reporter if he desired to make any remarks in regard to the recent Waikato Diocese controversy. Bishop Cherrington said: “There isn’t any. The matter was brought before the Synod and adjusted. I don’t suppose anything more will be heard of it. Personally, I should have desired it to be discussed before the public and the Press, but this was not done.”
