APPEAL TO PARENTS
SCHOOL SAVINGS DISPUTE BELMONT TEACHERS RESENTFUL The Belmont School teachers, resentful of the criticism of their opposition to the schools’ banking scheme, will explain their case to a meeting of parents on Thursday evening. The meeting has been called by Mr. J. H .Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, and the circular which lias been issued states that so far the teachers have had no opportunity of justifying their action. Mr. R. Harrison, headmaster of the school, said the meeting had been called for the purpose of explaining the teachers’ attitude to the parents, the only people concerned. “Had those who appear to favour the scheme been in earnest,” he said, “they could have done what independent parents had not felt impelled to do—call a meeting.” He went on to say that he resented strongly the recent persecution of his staff for daring to hold an independent opinion, and he was glad that the Auckland Savings Bank had disassociated itself from this objectionable feature. DISCOURTESY ALLEGED COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN REPLIES The chairman of the Belmont School Committee, Mr. Ernest Lilly, has replied declining to accept the invitation to attend the meeting. He writes to Mr. J. W. Williams, as follows: “In reply to your invitation as chairman of this committee to attend a meeting on Thursday evening next, for the purpose of discussing the savings bank scheme, I have to advise that as the school committee was not consulted with a view to calling such meeting—this body being the official representative of the district in so far as school matters are concerned —I cannot accept the invitation. The action of those responsible is to my mind a discourtesy to the Belmont School Committee, and furthermore, I cannot see any advantage in further discussion in view of the Auckland Savings Bank having turned the scheme down. . .
