Stewart, of Sydney. FAREWELL PARTY Mrs. E. M. Sutherland, of Suva, was the guest of honour at a charming little farewell tea party on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Sutherland, who has been on an extended visit to Auckland, left by the Aorangi for a short stay with her sister in Sydney before returning home by direct steamer in September. The party was held at. the Women’s Hostel, Symonds Street, and there were present about 20 friends. The guest of honour was the recipient of some beautiful flowers, and good wishes for a safe and pleasant journey were expressed, to which Mrs. Sutherland suitably replied. FAREWELL TO TEACHERS Members of the Auckland Women Teachers’ Association held a reception in the Y.W.C.A. hall on Thursday evening to pay tribute to the service of Miss Bayley and Miss Thompson, who have retired from active work on the executive. As a token of the esteem in which ! they are held, presentations were made I to them of pieces of crystal. | Miss Valentine gave a most interesting address on different phases of the work that is being done on behalf ! of the handicapped child. Miss Jean Begg also stressed this need on behalf of the problem girl. A delightful musical programme was given. OHAKUNE NOTES PROGRESSIVE 500 | There was a good attendance at the I progressive “500” tournament in the ! Plunket Rooms. The proceeds will be : handed to the Catholic Church fund. ! Competition was very keen, and Mesdames York, Forsyth and P. Wood tied for first place. The game was replayed and resulted in Mrs. York being declared the winner. Mr. L. Nation won the men’s prize. Mrs. Richel and Miss Fletcher were awarded the consolation prizes. SOCIAL EVENING Under the direction of a committee of ladies a very successful social was held in aid of the Ohakune Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild on Thursday evening. There was an attendance of about 100. Mr. Tregurtlia Supervised the games. Among the competitions, the deckquoits attracted much interest and was won by Miss Haddock and Mr. Creak. Other competition winners were Miss Aubyn, Miss Joy Lodge and Mr. Murphy. Musical items were given by the following:—Pianoforte solos by Miss Haddock and Miss Joy Lodge: vocal items by Miss Veale, Misses Phyllis and Mabel Ede. and Miss Betty Lodge; recitation by Miss Audrey Rodgers; mouth-organ selection, Mr. Granston.
