NEW REGENT
“SPORTING GOODS” Captain Winston's water lions and diving nymphs, the performances of which have been entertaining big audiences at the New Regent Theatre, are appearing for the last two days. It is an education to see the diving and swimming of the water lions in the huge tank on the stage, as they imitate every movement of the girls. It is scarcely an enviable experience to be swimming in the same tank with the sea lions, but the girls don’t seem to mind. The lions are beautiful swimmers. Heading the pictorial side of the programme is a comedy starring the popular actor, Richard Dix. The picture opens when Dix is travelling cross-country in a battered roadster, bound for Los Angeles. There he hopes to land a big order for a trick kind of golf suit he has invented. In the desert, he ruins his car helping a millionaire going Hast, and, since desert travel is pretty rough, the millionaire continues on the train. Dix is to take his Rolls-Royce back to Pasadena. A little further on, he meets Gertrue Olmsted and her mother, also going West. Their car is broken down, so Dix gives them a lift. He falls in love at once. She likes him, too, and when he drops them at Riverside she wires ahead to Pasadena for reservations for him at the exclusive hotel / where she lives. She thinks he is a millionaire, and he likes her so well he doesn’t tell the truth. From then on Dix finds himself in some queer situations that furnish the background for the comedy. Ford Sterling, a well-known comedian, is seen in the picture* in support of Dix. On Wednesday the management of the New Regent will present Florrie Le Vere, the vivacious London singing and dancing star, who will appear with Lou Handman, composer of many popular song hits.
