“ATTITUDE AUTOCRATIC”

MR. FURKERT ASSAILED QUESTION OF TRANSPORT (Special to THE SUN) BLENHEIM, Friday. ‘.'We should not be dictated to by Mr. Furkert, or anyone else,” said Mr. C. Nees at a meeting of the Marlborough County Council to-day. “I regard Mr. Furkert’s attitude as autocratic.” A letter had been received from Mr. F. W. Furkert, chairman of the Main Highways Board, and chief engineer of the Public Works Department, stating that he understood the council was making arrangements for the transportation of 700 barrels of bitumen from Wellington for tar-sealing work. As the Highways Board would be paying half or more of the charges, he hoped the council would consider giving the transport work to the Railway Department, provided its quotation compared favourably with those received from other sources. The council has been negotiating with a. firm to lay down a length of tar-sealed road, but any arrangement the firm would make with reference to transport by either rail' or water would have nothing to do with the council. The chairman, Mr. A. M. W. Adams, said that even had they been buying the bitumen themselves they could surely be trusted to make all necessary transport arrangements. It was not for Mr. Furkert to dictate to the council.
