WHEN WEATHER SETTLES
PLANS FOR FUELLING SOUTHERN CROSS Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. It is the firm belief of Mr. J. A. Philp, manager of the Union Oil Company, Ltd., the firm which is supplying the Southern Gross with fuel and oil, that the airmen are now ready for the trip and are waiting for the first suitable weather. Mr. Philp feels that the words, “any time now,” used in the cable to his firm, admit of no other meaning. “Of course they may not come for a fortnight,” said Mr. Philp. “But I would not be surprised to see them arrive within the next few days.”
To replenish the fuel tanks of the Southern Cross, 1,200 gallons of petrol will be needed, and a big motor tank truck will have to make two trips to the airdrome to complete the operation. Besides petrol 40 gallons of oil will be taken on board.
