MARRIED TWICE

ENGLISHMAN FACES BIGAMY CHARGE Having married at Old Trafford, Lancashire, England, in 1904, Ernest Heap, aged 48, who was charged at the Police Court this morning with bigamy, went through a form of marriage at Whakatane in 1919 with Lucy Abbott. Pleading not guilty, Mr. J. J. Sullivan, for Heap, asked the magistrate whether he considered a prime facie case had been established. Mr. Sullivan said that the evidence heard in the case showed that Heap had not heard from his wife for seven years, which according to statutory law was a complete answer to a charge of bigamy. Heap was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
