HAMILTON UNEMPLOYED
POSITION GETTING SERIOUS MEN TO WORK TWO WEEKS IN FOUR (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. Within the last few days there has been a marked increase in unemployment here according to the borough engineer, and at the Borough Council meeting last evening it was reluctantly decided to increase the interval during which relief men would not be working from one week to a fortnight, as previously. Reporting to the council, Mr. R. Worley, the engineer, said the number on the books had increased from under 50 a fortnight ago to 80 yesterday, and, if the council adhered to its decision to give men two weeks’ work and one week off, a scheme which seemed pos- i sible with less than 50 men involved, it would need to have 56 men on all the time, and the funds available for relief work would be depleted in five weeks. Even under present conditions and the position might get worse, the funds would be exhausted in eight weeks and further measures would be necessary to provide against the acute distress which must follow the cessation of relief works. The Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, said relief works were not intended for men to remain in town and lean heavily on the council. The position was getting more serious each day.
