“INIQUITOUS SYSTEM”
REVENUE OF HOSPITAL BOARDS government inquiry urged Press Association. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The method by which revenue is obtained for the maintenance of hospital boards was .severely criticised at a meeting of the City Council to-night by Cr. Clark, chairman of the Finance Committee. He said that his committee was of the opinion that the system should be the subject of an inquiry by a Government Commission, and that endeavours should be made to lessen the hardships imposed on local bodies. The discussion arose out of a communication frqm the Palmerston North Borough Council suggesting that the Government should be approached by local bodies with a request to revise the system. The committee recommended that tho council should co-operate. Cr. Clark described the system as a drain on local bodies. The system was iniquitous and no attempt had been made to investigate the proper method on a scientific basis. Tho Government should be asked to find a more suitable way of raising money and it should also alter the method of appointing boards. The present system was a burden which the people could ill afford to carry. The council adopted the committee's recommendation.
